Science Photo Competition 2018 — is a photography contest, conducted by global Wikimedia movement volunteers to promote science and illustration of science-related Wikipedia articles by quality modern photography and media-files. The contest takes place from the 15th of July through the 30th of September 2018.

Organizers: Wikimedia RU Non-Profit Partnership & Nauka TV channel.

Contest objective is to support creative expression and development of creative skills of contest participants. Just speaking about science is not enough, science must be illustrated.

The global Science Photo Competition is held a time in two years. But due to lot of photos from Russia last year, this year Russian organizers are additionally arranging the contest primarily in territory of Russia, but the participation is not limited by either territory or citizenship.

Contest works are accepted from the 15th of July through the 30th of September 2018. For uploading, one must have a registered Wikimedia Commons account showing a valid email address, for us to be able to contact the contest participant in case of his or her victory!

The contest is conducted in five nominations: «People in Science», «Microscopy images», «Non-photographic media», «Image sets» and «General category». Three winners will be selected in each of these, thus the jury will identify fifteen winning illustrations.

Each of these winners will receive monetary prize of 10 000 rubles.


All works must be uploaded under the free license. Possible license types are CC-BY-SA 4.0, CC-BY 4.0, CC0 1.0, and others.

Images, uploaded in the framework of the contest, must be taken or created by the uploading author. In case of multiple authors, names of all co-authors must be shown. If uploading is done on behalf of the organization, it must be done by an authorized representative thereof.

All images must contain good and detailed description in Russian or in English, and very desirable in both. This is important, as it's exactly the description that very much makes the image scientific!

Try to upload images in maximum resolution available, except for cases of technological limitation thereof. Images should not contain any watermarks or logos.

Scientists in their natural habitat.

Microscopy images

Optical, electron, and scanning probe microscopy images all fall under this category.

Non-photographic media

Audio and video files, computer-generated imagery, scientific visualization: infographics etc.

Image sets

2–10 images that are thematically linked and submitted as a set. Can be placed in one file or separately.

General category

All else goes into this category from archaeology to zoology and from vulcanology to astronomy.

1. Contest timeframe:

  • 1.1. From the 15th of July through the 15th of September 2018 — uploading contest works.
  • 1.2. From the 30th September through the 10th of October 2018 — judging.
  • 1.3. 12th of October 2018 — publishing contest results & informing the winners.
  • 1.4. From the 15th of October through the 31st of October 2018 — delivering prizes to winners.

2. Contest participation conditions

  • 2.1 Contest participants are not limited by the number of works filed for the competition.
  • 2.2 All works must be uploaded under free license. Acceptable types are CC-BY-SA 4.0, CC-BY 4.0, CC0 1.0, and others.
  • 2.3 Contest participants are not discriminated by their citizenship.
  • 2.4 Contest is open for both professional and amateur photographers.
  • 2.5 By entering a work for the competition, the participants confirms having read, understood and accepted these conditions.
  • Three winners in each of the five nominations will receive monetary prizes amounting to 10 000 rubles. Total prize fund amounts to 150 thousand rubles.

  • Sergey Vladimirov — Ph.D. (Candidate of Sciences) in Physical & Mathematical Sciences, docent of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.
  • Dmitry Jukov — Russian Wikipedia administrator, free knowledge advocate.
  • Anatoly Tsapenko — Ph.D. (Candidate of Sciences) in Mathematics, member of Wikimedia RU Non-Profit Partnership.

«Наука» — Russia's 24/7 TV Channel about discoveries and achievements in the field of Science and Technology. «Nauka 2.0» TV Channel started broadcasting in test-mode on the 15th of February 2011, launching full scale cable and satellite broadcasts in Russia's networks on the 2nd of April 2011. Since November 2011 TV Channel has enlarged its coverage area to include Latvia. Live programs were initiated in December 2011, starting with Noble Prize awarding ceremony at Stockholm.
