Russia's first paper encyclopedia under free licence
правитьRussia's first paper encyclopedia under free licence Russia now has first paper encyclopedia which is distributed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International free lincense. This is «ALL OF RUSSIA. Cities and settlements» encyclopedia, first published by the Institute of Industrial Economics & Management back in 2001.
Wikipedia used to be considered an antagonist to classical printed encyclopedias. To stress the main point (without going into detailed differences between online & paper encyclopedias) — Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, whilst paper encyclopedias, unfortunately, are not. This means that anyone can use all Wikipedia's materials without any limitations and special permissions from the rights owner, as long as a link to respective article is included. Text and illustrations from paper encyclopedias can't be used so freely, as this will qualify as copyright violation.
Encyclopedia «ALL OF RUSSIA. Cities and settlements»is one of the first respectable scientific encyclopedic publications containing detailed information about all cities of our country, as well as a large number of its non-town settlements, which are still of socio-cultural and economic significance. The encyclopedia was being prepared for publication in 1998—2000 and was printed in 2001. The work contains a large volume of information about history of Russia's cities, as well as their economic, socio-demographic & cultural development. One can find information about executive and legislative authorities, their names and principles of formation. Current legislation about municipal authorities was not yet development, so readers will discover a great diversity of state and municipal management structures Russia's cities and regions had at the verge the 20th and 21st centuries. The encyclopedia also reflects information about the economy of respective cities, main enterprises and organizations that existed at that moment in time.

WikiGap is a global initiative. People all over the world will come together to add more information into Wikipedia about women who made significant contribution into various areas. Wikimedia movement activists and Embassies of Sweden will simultaneously hold 8th of March dedicated joint events in more than 40 countries, from Sweden to Tanzania, Egypt and Columbia.

«Open Library» contest
править«Wikimedia RU» Non-Profit Partnership launched «Open Library» contest.
The contest takes place in the framework of «Open Library» Resource Center Project, directed at helping libraries to provide open access to Public Domain works. Participation is open to any Russian Federation library willing and able the following resources from their stock available for open access:
- Public Domain works (Art. 1282 of the Russian Federation Civil Code),
- Works not considered Objects of Copyright (Art. 1259 of the Russian Federation Civil Code, p.6) or
- Works distributed under free license (Art. 1286.1 of the Russian Federation Civil Code).
«Wikimedia RU» Non-Profit Partnership Executive Director Stanislav Kozlovsky stated that significant number of scientific and artistic works are still unavailable on the Internet, being accessible only on paper - in books, magazines and newspapers stored in libraries.
«Paper publications are not usually digitized due to copyright-related restrictions and thus end up being inaccessible. There are, however, some publications that can be legally digitized as their Copyright protection period is over and they are now in the Public Domain. The contest is to serve as an impetus to motivate libraries towards large-scale digitization of such publications. Knowledge should be serving people, not staying in storage as dead weight».
Contest is organized in three nominations:
- «Wikimedia Commons» - PD works being uploaded into the eponymous website;
- «Federal Reserve System of Knowledge Banks» - the winner defined by the number of openly published works that library registers with FRS;
- «Library's own electronic resources» - best E-library through the prism of, among others, such criteria as accessibility of works, search convenience and digital file quality.
Libraries are free to participate in any number of nominations. The contest runs through 30 June 2018. Works, uploaded by the libraries, will be registered and stored in Federal Reserve System of Knowledge Banks, established by the Internet-Publishers Association (Ассоциация интернет-издателей) together with other civil society organizations and Internet projects. Internet users will get access to all materials provided by participating libraries.
The prize fund of «Open Library» contest is 300 000 rubles. The project is created by Wikimedia RU Non-Profit Partnership funded through Russian Federation Presidential Grant for Development of Civil Society provided by the Presidential Grants Foundation.
Participation-related letters can be sent to lib@wikimedia.ru. For more details look here.

Just speaking about science is not enough, science must be illustrated. This mandates a need for a specialized scientific photography and illustration competition, and the first one will be taking place in November and December 2015 among 39 European countries (active and passive participation). On November 15 the competition was further joined by Nazarbayev University, representing Kazakhstan scientific community.
This competition will be useful for Wikipedia, because Wikipedia is an active environment dedicated to gathering and exchanging educational content free for all. Thus it is a wonderful platform for presenting scientific photos. Open access, interest in such information on the part of the community and users of Wikipedia and overall reliability are among many characteristics of the free encyclopedia that make it an attractive space for the promotion of science in general and scientific photography in particular.
Wikipedia is one of the leading knowledge sharing projects, whilst scientific illustrations are rich in information; thus, such a collaboration is a win-win situation for both the wiki-community and the scientific photographers. Science Photo Competition motivates parties to develop permanent sustainable relations with one another.
European Science Photo Competition consists of two stages: Russian-language part of the competition will be held from November 1st until December 31st of 2015, then local organizers will be sending local winners' photoes into the international finals, end results of which will be drawn by the end of January 2016.
Competition rules:
- Russian part of the scientific photography and visualization competition takes place in November and December 2015;
- Only own images (or done with co-authors, which must be indicated) are allowed for uploading. Uploading someone else's work is forbidden!
- All images must contain good and detailed description in Russian language. This is important, as to the great degree the image becomes scientific thanks to its description!!! (Example) and be appropriate for use in Wikipedia articles;
- Images must be uploaded under a free CC-BY-SA license;
- Images are being uploaded in line with one of the following five categories (nominations): People in Science, Microscopy images, Non-photographic media, Image sets and General category.
Russian part of the competition is being supported by well-known popular science publication and portals:
- «Кот Шрёдингера» All-Russian Science Festival Popular Science Magazine
- Infographer.ru Agency and Infographics Blog
- «Наука и жизнь» Magazine
- «Поиск» Scientific Community Weekly Newspaper

- «Маркетинговые коммуникации» Magazine of Grebennikov Publishing House
- «Московский университет» Lomonosov Moscow State University Information and Media Communication Center Multimedia Portal

Scientific supervision of the competition:
- Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Medical Biology (ГНЦ РФ-ИМБП РАН)
- Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Agronomy (RAS Institute of Agronomy)
- Russian Academy of Sciences Space Research Institute (RAS Space Research Institute)
The competition is joined by «Бесконечная наука» Open Scientific Photography Competition and «Университетская фотография» University Scientific Competition taking place in the framework of the 5th All-Russian Science Festival of Science in Krasnoyarsk Krai. As a result of these joint efforts, authors are to upload all competition images personally into Wikimedia Commons following a prepared form (in Russian), with description in two languages with a mention of the Wikipedia article where the work can be published. If there is no article on your topic neither in English, nor in Russian language versions, you are invited to create an article by yourself in line with Wikipedia policy (in Russian).
Winners will be receiving various valuable prizes at the official awarding ceremony. See details in the press release and the news of the competition (in Russian).
Unfortunately, previous publications are only available in Russian. We are always looking for volunteer interpreters
